eScience Labs is very new; who are you?

Yes, we are NEW! This means we can start from scratch and challenge existing paradigms.
We are a group of PhD scientists and educators, with decades of experience, who have become increasingly frustrated with the lack of opportunities for students to be introduced to the sciences. We are also parents and businessmen who recognize that we live in a different world and need to reach out to students in new ways.

What makes you different than others I have seen on the Internet?

There are good online tools, but in science that's not enough. There are also companies that provide hands-on experiments; some are relatively good, but many are not. What sets us apart is that we provide the best of both worlds. Our well-designed products combine a year-long series of hands-on experiments with supplemental online educational tools and support.

How do your products work with online courses or home school curricula?

We are not teaching the courses, merely supporting the instructors who do. Our kits are a comprehensive series of labs, adaptable to virtually any curricula. The instructor decides which topics to teach, in what order and how. It is their course; our kits support and reinforce their efforts.

Do I have to be taking an online course to use these kits?

We strongly recommend that a structured course is a component of your learning process. Certainly students will learn if they do the labs on their own, but the experience will be far more rewarding if it is supplemental to a well-taught course. However, our primary mission is to expose students to the marvels of science; we don't want to exclude anyone.
For each topic presented we provide an online video introduction to help students grasp and focus on key concepts. Every lab is written with a carefully crafted, sequential introduction to lay the foundation for the experiments being performed. It is our intent that by the time they perform the lab, students have the necessary background and tools to ensure that it is a learning experience.

Are they safe?

Safety comes first! It's as simple as that.
The first thing every student will see is a safety video. All of our chemicals are clearly marked with their safety ratings. We post all of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) online for every chemical in the kits. We also provide instructions on how to properly dispose of waste and leftover chemicals.
Nonetheless, there are inherent risks in science. Minors (under age 18) should not perform experiments except under the supervision of an adult. Students should never perform an experiment if they are not entirely comfortable or familiar with the material. We are available online and through our toll-free number (888-ESL-KITS) to address any safety concerns.
Finally, some experiments are simply too dangerous for students to perform in an unsupervised environment, but convey important concepts. One of the advantages to having an online component is that we may offer additional teaching tools. Unlike other providers, we can cover important, but potentially dangerous, concepts through online videos and demonstrations.

I am not familiar with labware. How can I identify the items in the kit?

eScience Labs has compiled a variety of commonly used labware in this picture. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email us at help@esciencelabs.com .
